The challenge cards are perfect for advanced KS3 French and beginner KS4 French students, who are really getting to grips with the concept of conjugation. This kind of activity really does help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their conjugation skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in French in general, and certainly in conjugating French ER verbs in the present tense in particular. To get the most from the questions, I frequently look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices - identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses. English Fruits Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of fruits in English in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words and more complex sentences in English. Sentence structure and word order may differ from students’ first and/or home language, so it’s important to provide them with opportunities to engage with language that moves beyond single-unit vocabulary as soon as possible. The questions are all in English, and range in complexity and challenge. I usually read through questions before my students work with the cards for the first time, to ensure that everyone understands any new or unknown language and structures. There are 35 fruits addressed in the task cards, and it’s unlikely that they are all in your teaching and learning plan. I always include additional vocabulary to add a little challenge, and to encourage students to think a little more creatively and independently. I’ve used definite, indefinite and partitive article, and singular and plural - this really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts, including the lack of noun gender in English, without explicit instruction. There are some translation questions too - both from French to English and English to French, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner to intermediate learners. I explain that there are several possible correct alternatives, as translation is not a word-for-word activity, which is definitely useful for them to know from the very beginning of their learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and grammatical concepts creatively and practically too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other, and I encourage them to use the existing questions as a frame of reference as they create their own. This set features ten differentiated word searches with answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 41 countries / territories where French is an official language. The word searches help students develop their knowledge and awareness of the Francophone world, and just how widely it is spoken around the globe. I’ve used the definite article for the countries, so that students can see which countries are masculine, and which feminine, which in turn helps consolidate knowledge of gender in French. Grids 1-4: students search for a particular country. Grids 5 & 6: students search for a range of capital cities. Grid 7: 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid. Grid 8: 16 countries, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid. Grids 9 & 10: a selection of national flags, students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag. There is a single grid per page, A4 (8.5 x 11) portrait format. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Each grid has a corresponding answer key, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. There is also a complete reference sheet of all countries, capital cities, continents and flags. The word searches work well across the school year, not only when you’re focusing on les pays francophones. ESL EFL ENGLISH VERBS LIST reference resource for students focusing on high-frequency English verbs. I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. This list is a collection of 100 high-frequency and common English verbs that students generally need in the advanced beginning to intermediate stages of their English Language learning programmes. It includes regular and irregular verbs, with some modals. They are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize English verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs - at that point we can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning the verbs all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing English verb vocabulary. There are two backgrounds to choose from - England flag (which I tend to use as part of a grammar display), and black wave - students tell me that this makes vocab lists more visually appealing, which is really useful when they’ve got a lot of vocab to work through and learn. Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This mini-bundle features***twenty differentiated word searches***, focusing on a range of fruits and vegetables in Spanish, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The fruits and vegetables include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps students think a little more laterally about language, and their new vocab - they may learn la manzana or la patata, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example. There are high-frequency fruits & vegetables, such as apple, pear, potato and cabbage, and also fruits & vegetables which may be new to some learners, such as redcurrant, starfruit, artichoke and asparagus. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as ***the letter j (uvas rojas/ajo)***, which is a sound particular to Spanish, and the***letter ñ (piña / champiñones)***, as the tilde + n plays a very important role in Spanish pronunciation. There are 10 Spanish to Spanish grids, labelled with a lemon/carrots, where learners are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 10 English to Spanish grids, labelled with a raspberry/pepper, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid, and each consecutive grid has an increasing number of directions in order to increase the challenge. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and English, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer key grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. ***Answer key***s are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, as it mirrors the direction of reading from left to right in both Spanish and English. The larger font also makes language very clear and accessible. This kind of activity is really versatile too - I use them for cover lessons, as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m focusing on fruits and vegetables in Spanish. GCSE SPANISH KS3 SPANISH KS4 SPANISH PRESENT TENSE IR VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE 25 high-frequency Spanish IR verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for KS3 Spanish students who are beginning to work with compound sentences and longer texts, and generally developing their knowledge and understanding of conjugation and tense in Spanish. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The workbook focuses on the correct conjugation of verbs, rather than usage, but I definitely find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example, with the Spanish present tense, I encourage students to look for patterns across all the verbs, such as the singular pronouns, including for example the singular formal pronoun Usted form being identical, which is fairly standard, but the conjugation of the formal singular Usted does frequently lead to errors at this stage of learning. Speaking and writing are language skills that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is really beneficial. The questions in the sets are differentiated, addressing a broad range of ability, which aim to progress all learners. Tenses include present, future, near future, perfect and conditional. Question formats are likewise varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. The prompts are really versatile too, specifically with a focus on speaking and writing. GCSE ITALIAN PRESENT TENSE -IRE VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE I’ve found that these are a great introduction to, and consolidation of, conjugating Italian verbs. There are 25 high-frequency regular and irregular -IRE verbs in the present tense. -IRE verbs with –ISC in their conjugation can be a little tricky, and these drills definitely help students embed the correct conjugation. I encourage students to look for patterns across all the verbs, such as the formal Lei form being identical to the conjugation of singular pronouns. The workbook focuses on the mechanics of conjugation, rather than usage, but I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example, students whose first language is English do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in both languages, and I frequently see attempts such asio sto lavorare for I am working or similarly io faccio lavorare for I do work. I refer frequently the difference in usage, and this is important particularly when explaining when and in which contexts to use the simple present and the continuous / progressive present tense. The Challenge One Answer Key has both simple present and continuous present tense to help embed this notion a little more.
